Little Green Dot grew from a vision to make beautiful, quality baby gifts and toys, in a traditional and ethical way, so that they will be cherished now and in the future.
Little Green Dot is the baby of Lisa Tonge, a born and bred Dubliner now living in beautiful West Cork in a little town called Clonakilty. I live with my wonderful Norwegian partner, Frank, my super little girl, Sofia and my new little man, Daniel. Life is good 🙂
I have always had a love for hand-crafted things and appreciated the time and effort that it takes to make them. Tied in with this is a reluctance to buy mass-produced toys and baby gifts when I could never be sure of the quality of materials and conditions that they were made in.
When lovely babies started arriving with good friends and family, it was a natural choice for me to make something for them. I had been making things for the previous 10 years and learned my hard-earned skills over endless cups of tea and many (some tearful) hours over the sewing machine. It was a pleasure to use these (now developed) skills to handcraft a unique, beautiful piece that will be treasured for years to come. It still gives me a bit of a thrill to know that every baby gift that I make will be given to a new little baby and become part of the story of their birth and precious first years.
When my own little one came along in July 2012, making fun, colourful, soft toys that I could tell for certain were safe took up more of my time. I spent (and still do use) many hours giving dollies their smiles and elephants their eyes. It gives me great satisfaction to know that every toy is individual and has been chosen for a little person as a special toy to be enjoyed now and kept for the future. Everything that is made by Little Green Dot echoes very old craft traditions. Often in the past, these baby or child items were made by a loving hand, kept and passed on through the generations. All that we make a Little Green Dot is crafted with this in mind. This respect for quality hand-crafted goods and an appreciation of the time and effort that it takes to make them is very strong in Ireland. This is also tied in with a strong ‘support local’ philosophy which makes it possible to have the thriving craft sector which Little Green Dot is a part of.
So far so good…
Little Green Dot was launched in October 2013 to a very positive response (click here to view testimonials from some of our lovely customers). We are regularly featured in local and national press and were even featured on TV3’s Ireland AM in July 2016. In 2014 and 2016, we were shortlisted in in the Maternity & Infant Awards in two categories; trendy tots brand and best toddler/baby toy. We are registered with the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland and Cork Craft and Design.
We have expanded our range to incorporate ethically sourced organic fabrics, personalised gifts and have opened our new craft studio and shop. Its been a busy few years and the future is full of possibilities! Lisa is also the person behind Handcrafted Hens and is involved in Clonakilty Brewing Company
